It would happen only with the radio, but the CD changer would work fine. Each time I thought my HU was dying, since that's how these things tend to fail. However, both times the antenna had become disconnected back in the trunk.
You don't have a CD player or changer, but did you try a cassette? If you get sound with a tape (if you even own a tape...I don't), then check the antenna in the trunk. If not, then time for a new one. I have a sweet new Clarion on the way that matches very nicely with the dash just because I want better sound.
PS: The round thing you plugged in is for CD.
