They can't really have done that exactly because the Excel came out in '85, same time as the Saab/Lancia/Alfa/Fiat project but you're right, it does look like a generic Giugiaro body shape - it could be a rip-off of the VW Golf/Rabbit Mk 1, with a dodgy rear screen added, or the Passat, or the Lancia Delta or some of the less charismatic Renaults (I think that means all of them!) - you could keep going really. Maybe that's what cars looked like in the 80s!
The article on Giugiaro in Wikipedia has a list of all the stuff he designed, truly amazing, not surprising he repeated himself occasionally...
Taking this further, it's fascinating to see the same design ideas appear on many cars at the same time, and I suppose the shapes and details are seen as shows, as project cars or whatever - or someone invents a new way of mounting windows or making lights or whatever, and everyone picks up on it. Wheel arch treatments are a case in point, Ford came up with some stuff that found its way all round the world.
