Ok, so 8 months ago, the upper heater hose sprung a leak in my '94 Aero. The leak developed right at the 90 degree elbow off of the cylinder head. I was able to get a replacement part at NAPA, but upon removal, I found that the hose coupler between the long and short parts of the hose (inside the aquarium) was badly cracked as well (must've been original). NAPA didn't have the OEM equivalent, and I didn't want to wait a week for the part to come in from eeuroparts. So, I went over to PepBoys and found a similar plastic coupler that fit. Great, all done!
Well, guess what? PepBoys parts do not always equal OEM equivalent parts. I got in the Aero the other day to run up the street for something or other. 3 blocks down the road, I'm enveloped in a cloud of sickly sweet smelling steam. I pull over, and pop the hood, and coolant is pouring out from the aquarium drain.
So I get the car home, and open up the false bulkhead, and whaddaya know, the plastic coupler is broken clean in half. It actually turns out, the thing has fractured into 3 parts, with pieces stuck in either end of the hoses.
The lesson here is (once again), if you're going to fix something, fix it right. Had I been far from home when this happened, it could have been a real pain, and a cost a lot more time and money than ordering the right part in the first place.
