(Since I am just a private citizen and not in the car biz I can say this...)
Neuter the system - make it so that it is no longer a problem at all.
It is very easy, I've done it a bunch of times now.
On a '93, just remove the ECU under the dash, remove the warning light
from the instrument cluster, and remove the unexploded incendiary device
from the steering wheel center (and dispose of it by using a big can and
some looooong test leads - one zap of 12v and watch how high it goes !)
I mean JUST the incendiary device - not the big pad/cushion thing, put
that part back so the car looks/works right otherwise.
Done. No warning light, no over-age, iffy system that was due for total
replacement after it's 10 year service interval, no worries.
"Air bag" has always been a severe misnomer and misleading as can be -
when someone shoots a shotgun, the cloud of nasty stuff left hanging
afterwards is not AIR, and not nice to breathe at all - and it surprises
me there's been no class-action suit against the automakers/gov. yet
for this bit of nasty, misleading verbiage designed to make getting
your face smashed by a high-velocity charge into a 'safety device'.
Nasty stuff indeed.
Best Wishes.
