Thanks for the suggestion. I can see silicone doing the trick, since the casing doesn't seem to be under any great stress. That'll be my first approach.
Sooner or later, I just know that I'll want to replace the casing with an intact one. Not that I'm a fanatic, but I subscribe to the Click and Clack theory of car maintenance. Fix everything as the problem arises, and you won't grow to hate your car. (And I really do like this car. It's the best 9000 I've ever had.)
Case in point: Elite Auto Glass replaced my cracked windshield (the price of living in the Rockies) with the usual "meet or beat OEM" drum roll. What they didn't say is they use their own, oversize trim around the glass. Looks nothing like a Saab installation. Turns out ALL the local dealers use them, too. I had them remove the new windshield and replace it, using Saab trim. Couldn't stand looking at their ungainly aftermarket trim.
Back at the casing! Is there some knack to removing the top of the evaporator clam-shell, while everything else remains in the car. I just know that the knowledge of a temp fix is going to fester! If I do have to remove the rigid high and low tubes, is there an easy way to tell if refrigerant is still in the system before getting a frost-bitten eyeball?
