The crown wheel can definitely lose teeth, as can the pinion on the output shaft that drives it. With the car jacked up, turn one wheel by hand and see if the other wheel turns backwards. This indicates that the carrier and the little differential wheels and pinions are working. If, as you say, power does not turn the wheels, the output shaft pinion is not driving the crown wheel which turns the carrier.
I went through my transmission once, and though I wouldn't consider it easy, it was educational and has held up for 25k or so.
