Last month when my shifter got sloppy overall. Coupling looked solid and the tapered pin nut had backed itself out a few threads. As I was tightening the nut I could feel it getting more solid and then all of a sudden the pin snapped inside. A hose clamp is around it now keeping pressure on the taper but I did order a new one.
spend a minute with a flashlight and 8mm (or 9mm?) socket and CAREFULLY check the torque on the taper pin nut. You might be pleasantly surprised.
