Does the pictogram indicate any headlamp problems? Did your local Saab garage replace both the large red headlight relay and the orange lamp control relay (also called a bulb check relay)? These relays are located under the hood inside a covered box that's located in front of the battery. Your car is the right age for the orange lamp control relay to lose electrical continuity at one or more internal solder joints, which produces strange symptoms. The lamp control relay (actually it isn't a relay, but that's what it is called) can affect both low and high beams.

It is cheaper and better to test electrical parts than to replace them without knowing for sure what is defective. I bought a new headlight relay (the big red relay) only to discover that the orange lamp control relay was the reason why my high beams gradually stopped working. If I recall correctly the high beam problem wasn't indicated on the pictogram, which was further evidence that the lamp control relay should be checked. The lamp control relay affects both the headlights and the pictogram.

The pins on the lamp control relay are labeled. You can remove the lamp control relay and test the internal circuits with a multimeter as follows:
There should be no resistance between 56a and 56aR (high beam right side)
There should be no resistance between 56a and 56aL (high beam left side)
There should be no resistance between 56b and 56bR (low beam right side)
There should be no resistance between 56b and 56bL (low beam left side)

If you have high resistance or get erratic readings, then the relay has one or more places where the solder is no longer making a good electrical connection. A bad solder joint can be reflowed with a 25 watt soldering iron. I repaired my lamp control relay about 9,000 miles ago, and it has been flawless since then. You can buy a new lamp control relay at eEuroparts for about $45 if this sound like more trouble than it's worth to you.

Electrical problems yield to reason and persistence. Your car is giving you clues; somewhere probably under the hood there's an intermittant break in the high beam and low beam circuits. My guess is it's the lamp control relay. Figure it out yourself, and you won't spend a lot of money.

Haynes publishes a Saab 9000 service and repair manual. The ISBN number is 1 85960 764 0 and you can probably find it and buy it online. This message board is also a goldmine of information that's easy to find by using the search window.
