The plastic one will do just fine. They are good for at least 3-4 years.
I just upgraded the heater core in my 92 9000S to a practically brand new all metal Saab one I scored out of a 9000 at a you pull it junkyard for $20.
The plastic heater core I had in my car was still good. I Put that in 3 years ago although the plastic was yellowed.
Do as David states - Replace the blower motor at the same time. I'd also check the condition of the two flap doors, and replace if the foam has degraded quite a bit.
