To be honest with you William, I don't think I've ever looked into an overflow bottle and not seen it look disgusting. Whether the mess was bars leak, or just coolant system particulates / rust / whoknows what, discoloring the clear plastic....its tough to tell.
130k on a 97 is a baby. There shouldn't much to leak by the alternator; there is a metal pipe that runs from the water pump (below the A/C compressor) to the back drivers side of the block, where one of the heater core hoses attaches; this pipe is L shaped and about 30" long overall. I've never seen one leak, and the only way it really could, back where the alternator is, is to have it somehow chaffe through, or rust through?? I'd let the car run for a while, get it good and hot and look for any dripping on the ground. By the time 1997 rolled around, 9000's were pretty damn good cars; they'd worked the kinks out in previous model years. 1997's are good cars
