I'm confused about the issue with your 'combi headlight/dimmer switch'
From everything I can find, the headlight switch and the instrument dimmer are separate switches, and they were common for most years. Are you referring to the 'HIGH BEAM' stalk on the steering column? That was a special for '86, and the poor design was to run the full headlight current through the switch contacts. From what I can tell, that breathtakingly bad design was unique to the early 9000, and not used on the 900.
Yup, you're in trouble if the 'dipped beam' stalk switch is the problem. It depends on how electrically savvy you are. The best solution is to actually wire in a headlight relay, and if the switch contacts aren't too badly burned, use the contacts to actuate the relay. If the contacts are too far gone, all I can recommend is to install a later year stalk and wire in a headlight relay.
