Opinions vary whether the different design of the timing chain tensioner is an improvement. But I am very sure it is introduced later rather than an old design. As a matter of fact, I was forced to do the change on my 95 525. The original engine has an aluminum chain guide. Unable to remove it without removing also the head I saw it in half in order to remove it. The sam M50 engine BMW changed the chain guide to plastic for later built (imagine SAAB has used the plastic guides for years.). The advantage of it is you can bend it and snap it in place. BTW you will find the same thing on the 9k where you can bend and snap the chain guide in with the head in place. In addition BMW no longer sells the aluminum chain guide. BMW often does this forcing design changes down owners throat.
You will see in the previous picture the old tensioner has a different tip than the new one. With the new plastic chain guide I bought the new tensioner has to be used.
