A few things can cause this.
The hose from the valve may have fallen off. Not uncommon with turbo engines. Step 1 is to trace the fat hose that comes from in front of the right (facing forward) wheel well, near the reservoir tank, that goes to the intake throttle body. Make sure it hasn't fallen off. While you're at it, check all your vacuum lines.
Next, pop out the right front turn signal assembly. It's easy - one bolt, and it comes out. Look inside with a flashlight. You'll see that fat hose going to the valve, which sits on top of the charcoal canister in the fender. Sometimes that hose pops off. If so, you've found the problem.
Yes, it can also be a loose gas cap, or a gas cap with a bad gasket. Gas caps can actually wear out. It could also be the hose from the tank to the canister, a cracked canister, or a vent pipe that has come off the tank. The last few of those aren't any fun.
If you don't see anything obvious, try tightening the gas cap (always three clicks), clear the fault, and see if it returns. If it does, buy a new gas cap. Not expensive. Does it impact performance? Yes - it's an air leak into the system. And you'll fail emissions, assuming they test them in your state.
