For what it's worth, I'd doubt that a nut on top of the strut would be able to "back" off. That annoying "clunk" you are hearing sounds suspiciously like a blown strut or a blown strut bearing. I've had a failure after 1 week from a brand new Bilstein. Autopsy by them showed a metal shaving from the manufacturing process caused the failure. You didn't mention if you put on lowering springs 18mos ago or what brand of struts though.
I always cringe when anyone suggests "pipe wrench" or "vice grips" in the same sentence as struts. That's a HECK of a lot of force to be applying with any allen key though.
Even if it took two weeks, just find someone with an impact gun and 5 seconds of their time. It usually helps to have a 6 pack of beer in one hand :)
