The system can handle up to four remotes. There are four 'slots.' The car comes with two remotes and two slots filled.

Often someone will lose a remote, and the dealer will then program the new remote into a spare slot. If it happens a few more times, all the slots can be filled. That might be Bruce's issue.

The dealer can use the TechTool to clear any one slot, or clear them all. If you're down to one remote and four slots filled, it isn't clear which slot lines up with your 'good' remote.

I've run into dealers that don't want to clear remotes. Some dealers are under the impression that if you clear out all the remotes, the car may refuse to start again. For North American cars, this is totally wrong. European market cars have a different alarm system. Despite that, I've had dealers refuse to erase any remote for fear of turning the car into a brick.

If you've got spare slots, you can program the new remotes into those slots. If you don't have any spare slots, or enough spare slots, the TechTool can clear all four slots, and then simply program in the remotes you have. Really. The car won't get 'bricked.'

When I got my car, it came with one remote. I bought another from a parted-out car and went to my dealer. The PO had a habit of losing remotes, so all the slots were filled. My local dealer didn't want to erase any slots. I ended up borrowing a Tech Tool from John Moss a Saab and doing it myself. When I told John what the dealer had said, he just shook his head.
