If you were driving on a bad bearing, said bearing would likely have been hot rather often, if not always.
And replacing the hub unit requires removing the ABS sensor, yes? (Forgive me, it's been a long time since I've been in that area of a 9000.)
Assuming so, then perhaps the wiring and/or internals that were just hanging on previously were simply done in by the recent removal and reinstallation of that sensor.
Why not try a new sensor there, or perhaps get an ISAT scan for a more positive diagnosis? Of course the sensor may cost the same as getting that scan, and it does seem like a high probability that sensor is the culprit, so maybe just throwing a sensor at it is a reasonable gamble.
