Thanks for the info on compression tests guys, that makes sense.
Turns out the reason it was so hard to crank over and why it died on me while driving was the alternator siezed up. I took off the belt and checked for siezed accessories but, damn, must not have spun the alternator!! Once I got it started with carb cleaner and the belt was SMOKIN' I found it. Check and Check again!!!
There's a '91 in the wrecking yard with a 115Amp alternator that I'll pull and maybe do the brushes/regulator on.
Any tips on that??
