hello,
I have two electrical problems with my '97 9000 CSE
They are intermittent, and sometimes happen at the same time.
1) Sometimes starter motor turns over very slowly, and the voltmeter
reads around 8 volts, of course it's barely visible while the starter
is cranking. Even though it barely turns over, it has always started
after cranking it for about a minute or even longer. While cranking the starter, I can hear the relay under the dashboard clicking open and closed.
Then somehow it starts even with the super slow rotation of the starter motor. I might then turn the engine off and try again, and presto, it starts right up. It works great for a few days, and then it happens again.
The battery is rather new, and has been load tested, it checks out
fine. I've also read the voltage with engine off at the battery
and it's always at 12 volts.
The starting problem seems exactly like when a car with a carburator
leaks down gas from the bowl at night, and is flooded. Just like that
problem, as soon as the excess gas is exhausted, the car starts normally
until the next time it's flooded.
Of course since there's no carb on a Saab, it can't be that, but it acts
just like that.
Problem 2) Automatic door lock doesn't work, neither by remote control
nor by the key. To lock the car, I can fix this by hand locking all the doors inside, and then locking the driver's door with a key. After that the automatic lock system works again.
The thing is, both problems are intermittent, so I haven't been able to
get help at a mechanic shop.
Anyone have any ideas about what's going on with the starter?
Could the two problems be connected? Mainly I am concerned about the
starter, but I wonder if the two problems are the same problem.
The slow starter problem has been going on for months, but it only
happens about once a week. I'm curious because I thought the fuel
pump needed about 10 volts to work at all, as was the case with my
former Saab 9000T, an '87.
thanks in advance,
MichaelO
