I had similar problem, but my ignition switch showed signs before it stopped working. One of these signs was that the battery voltage printed on the dashboard was incredible low, like 8 V before starting the engine. Second sign was, that the dashboard illumination came on few seconds later when I turned the key to ON. I dismounted the switch and I have cleaned the electrical contacts and now it works fine.
