Idler And Tensioner Pulley Installation

The tensioner pulley is showing a 1/8" lip to the wheel side that I can't lose; I feel like I've been trying to straighten the hem of a silk stocking. The inevitable question, then: Isn't there one side of this pulley that is supposed to be installed facing the engine? And isn't this true of the idler pulley as well? And, doesn't all this matter enough to do over? By the by, for the second straight time I did not need the angle iron tool--the belt by itself provides enough resistance to loosen the tensioner pulley bolt.
