Coolant gauge

Okay. I have a 95 CSE v6 that has an interesting trait. The temp gauge just drops off to 0 and the high speed radiator fan turns on. I can only assume that this is a " fail safe" mode to prevent overheating when information is lost. The gauge will stay that way for days and then all of a sudden work just fine. It sounds like a bad ground but all other gauges work just fine....althought the EDU lights on one side go off from time to time..but it never coinsides with the temp gauge.
I can replace the temp sensor in the engine..but of course that requires removal of the upper portion of intake. Is there any grounding points I could be checking? Because when the gauge is working it works like a charm. I try moving the wires that lead to the sensor to see if they are bad and I cannot effect anything. When the gauge is working and then " drops off" it seems when I am going over a bump...but not always.

Any thoughts?
