Other things to look for on the front Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: steering rack shifting/clunking after curb hit, Rod ![]() |
"When it rains it pours." Sorry for your bad luck.
Be sure to check the left side subframe and the left control arm for bending or buckling - these parts (on the right side) were both bent when my car was hit diagonally at a low speed, replaced with used newer parts. If there is buckling in the subframe, it may be subtle but the smooth flat bottom surface will appear dented and may have some flaking paint/plating - compare it to the other car.
Check the left tie rod, it should be obvious if it is bent. If the rack is still intact, you might be able to get away with a partial removal to replace the rack bushings; the hardest part of removing the rack is getting the big part (where the pinion gear and hoses are) past the gear selector rod for the transmission (to the right) or past the wheel well opening (to the left).
Also check the runout of the wheels, there is a good chance that they are bent. You may want to postpone the hauling off of your old car a few more days.
