I had this issue recently, the alternator working some of the time but not other times. Based on Ari's input I replaced the VR, which has the brushes attached. I got a Bosch part fo $40 at CarQuest. I have a '94 and was able to replace the VR without removing the alternator without too much trouble.
I did it mostly by feel, since you can't see very well, so I didn't use gloves. I highly recommend using dental floss to compress the brushes before installing the VR (takes another person to tie the floss tight while you compress the brush springs).
The brushes on the VR I removed were pretty much totally gone. I'm amazed that they worked at all. I can see how it wouldn't be too hard to replace the brushes on a VR, but that's more work. I might give it a try on the one I removed so I have it as a spare.
