speedometer failure clearer, trip odometer working

so, i've been driving the car more lately so the speedometer failure which was intermittent is happening more often and for a longer period of time, today i noticed two things:
1. when the speedometer isn't working i hear a buzzing sound coming from it
2. when the speedometer isn't working, the odometer isn't working, but the trip odometer IS WORKING.
also, the computer EDU works, as i set an alarm for 30 mph that goes off when the speedometer is reading zero and i'm moving
so, it appears some part of the speedometer itself is failing? this suggests the wiring harness to the speedometer cluster is ok, as the trip odometer is working?
does this logic make sense?
can the speedometer be replaced without replacing the entire instrument cluster?
thanks
