Car will be ok if ambient temp isn't high Posted by sam96CS [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: i mistakenly put in the wrong oil, will my car be ok., lns9kaero, Sun, 17 May 2009 10:32:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The "5" in "5W30" isn't a problem; the "30" might be. You didn't say where you're driving the car and how long until your next change. If you're planning to do a lot of driving when the ambient temperature is 85F or high, then you'd be better off with 0W40 or 5W40. Do NOT use any additive to "thicken" your oil.
5W30 is one of the weights specified in the '96 owners manual that is good for winter driving. BUT the manual also calls for service grade SH which is high in ZDDP (zinc and phosphorus) and is hard to find.
If you mostly will drive when ambient termperature are moderate and you have a high quality air filter and a high quality oil filter, then just check your oil level when you buy gas. The level should be at about the "X" in "MAX" on your dipstick. Change it at about 3,000 miles if it is conventional oil or around 5,000 miles if it is synthetic. If you need to add oil before the change, it's okay to put in the 10W30 that you usually use.
Don't use a thicker oil than SAAB specifies in the manual just because your mileage is high or you see a little smoke. Go for quality lubrication, not thickness, and remember that fluids and filters are cheap.
