Replacing the timing chain.

I have been contemplating replacing the timing chain on our 94 9000 2.3 cse non turbo. Does this mean an engin out or can I use a split chain and get away without replacing the lower tensioners, just the upper one?
I've seen this done on a c900 some years ago, which had the same block and head configuration?
