That's the usual "Car Talk" phrase for a mechanic needing to generate additional income.....
Do a search on "left front sensor" or "left front crash sensor" and you will see a number of posts; this is because this is the default failure fault code for the SRS. Uninformed mechanics replace the sensor part, reset the code and all is well - until it fails again (and probably due to the same code). If you have a circa 1994 car (like mine), it's probably due to an oxidized crimp in the cable between the sensor and the SRS control box.
It's is possible that the modules are not communicating, but your mechanic has already aroused my suspicion by trying to charge you $160 to read fault codes. Is their tool communicating with the ECU and not the other boxes, or not communicating in general? I suspect pilot error operating the tool here - I have observed my mostly-SAAB indie sometimes having problems getting his Tech-II tool to talk to my car, eventually it does.
