axle shaft swap....what the heck is this thing Posted by skibumm100 [Email] (#3255) [Profile/Gallery] (more from skibumm100) on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 05:37:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi guys. Swapped out the axle shafts on my 97 CSE (ripped CV joint boots) and saw something I haven't seen before when doing this job. The driver's side went easy because it's on wheel bearing #3 in three years, compliments of Sears Auto Center. Nothing corroded on that side. Passenger side didn't want to come out off the wheel bearing and took quite a bit more "persuation". I use an oak block and hammer to drive it out. I noticed some black plastic(?) pieces falling out of the area behind the hub as I was driving the splined shaft out of the hub. I have never seen this plastic stuff between the hub and CV joint before. Was it a plastic thrust washer or some sort of hardened sealer to keep debris and moisture out of the splined area? It came out in pieces and was pretty brittle. The worst part is I think the wheel bearing on the passenger side is damaged. The brake discs are rubbing when going around corners. I can't feel any play in the wheel bearing. Normally when the disc rubs that hard you can feel play in the wheel bearing.
