Only 500 miles? I dragged a 4x8 trailer, loaded with Vintage Saab parts to Atlanta, GA from Northern NJ one winter's day, behind a 1991 9000 turbo 5-speed, on a light trailer that had no brakes. The trailer was probably overloaded (I'm not recommending you do the same...), but I got down to Atlanta just fine.
Dropped off the parts, and my co-driver (he was buying another 9000 at the time), and headed back north with the empty trailer. No problems, over 800+ miles, including driving through the mountain backroads of GA & NC to look at some 5-door 99s & 900s.
The important thing is that the trailer not outweigh the car (not a problem with a small trailer - usually), And that you drive very, very, VERY carefully on the highway. If you're used to tossing your 9000 around like a rally car, don't do it. Try to imitate the little old lady in the slow lane more, and you won't have any problems.
What is it you're hauling? And do the U-Hauls you mentioned have brakes, or not? If they have brakes, then the tow rating on the 9000 should go up to 2,000 lbs or more.
