1987 9000 Turbo. Battery is in great shape. While going down our driveway, engine stopped and would not restart. So, parked it at the bottom under gravity, and drove another of our 9000’s to work.
Saturday morning troubleshooting revealed no spark using timing light. Checked timing light on another 9000. Timing light is OK.
So, started swapping ignition parts with another, running 9000 – a 1986. Didn’t want to touch my wife’s “newer” and pristine 1989 9000 T!
Back to the non-start 87. Cranking makes tachometer bounce, as it should. This suggests Hall Sensor in distributor is sending a signal – (is this definitive?)
The following swaps were then made between the non-start 87 and the running 86. The 86 ran after every swap. The 87 never showed spark with the timing light (also checked each time, in case it went defunct).
(Timing light gives ONE flash, rarely, over long cranking.)
Swapped coil HT leads.
Swapped ignition coils.
Swapped ignition modules (top of inner fender, driver’s side).
Swapped distributors from a different, last known to run 1986 undergoing transmission work. (I was hoping to save some time with ignition retiming). If I have to, I’ll swap with a running 9000.
When none of this worked, I ran though Tom Townsend’s checklist. Everything – continuity, voltages, passed.
I’m obviously missing something. So, what’s going on? I read somewhere that there’s another ignition amplifier type device behind the glove compartment in 1987’s, but know nothing about it.
I didn’t check spark plug wires or plugs – they couldn’t all have failed at the same time!
And yet, and yet….
