hmattyj,
The whine you hear when downshifting into first gear could likely be caused by a failing synchronizer. You might consider double-clutching, matching transmission gear speed to engine speed. You can perform this 2nd to lst downshift simply:
1. Clutch in
2. Neutral
3. Clutch out
4. Rev engine
5. Clutch in
6. Lower gear
7. Clutch out
(It is probably easier to master this from 4th to 3rd downshift.)
You might want to check out

or even Wiki:

If the deceleration whining noise disappears, VOILA!- -a failed synchro.
A synchonizer is a brass ring that absorbs speed differences between the transmission shaft input and gear shaft output. Repair requires transmission disassembly/rebuild.
On the other hand, mastering the art of double-clutching can allow you to downshift until you decide to have the transmission rebuilt. "You can pay me now," (transmission R&R), "or pay me later" (double-clutch).
Happy trails!
