Car Rocking at Altitude/Mtns- Long

The Car... 97 Aero Automatic... 76,000 miles
I bought this car several months ago from a Colorado SAAB indie/body shop and recently took my first trip into the Colorado high country. Heading up into the mountains, at about 70mph and roughly 3,000 RPM, the car was "rocking" (almost lurching forward)and the turbo gauge was moving up and down in exact rhythm in the fringe (creme colored) area. In some cases I could accelerate through it and the car would REALLY zip forward but in most cases I could not and we rocked out the whole way. Very disappointing. I have not noticed this in Denver driving but have noticed at times that the acceleration is a bit jerky (i.e slow response followed by acceleration that pushes me into the seat, then acceleration stops, then very strong again). I drive with a light foot, but I chalked it up to me getting used to the car. Maybe they are related.
Looking for any thoughts or similar experiences that might give me some background prior to taking the car in. Thanks, All.
