Construction fuel pump

Recently I bought a second hand fuel pump in order to have this pump at hand in case my fuel pump goes south.
It is a 1997 Walbro pump and I cleaned it thoroughly.
Good opportunity to see how this thing works.
Now my question: fuel coming from the pump unit goes through a bended fuel line tot a T-connector.
One outlet of the T connector goes upwards to the pressure fitting on top of the pump unit, the outlet goes back to the bottom of the plastic container.
Is there anybody who can explain why?
Thanks
