bad rod bearing Posted by TML [Email] (#2212) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TML) on Fri, 24 Jul 2009 11:48:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My '97 Aero 5spd has been diagnosed with a bad rod bearing; it has a rather loud clunking sound which gets more intense with higher rpm, and is much louder under the engine than from over top of it.
My choices are to pull the oil pan off, and hopefully replacing the bearings is all that is required, or pull the whole engine so it can be inspected for further damage and repair as required. What would be the smartest course of action, and is there a write-up somewhere for the removal? I've removed the transmission a couple of times, but never the engine.
I have replaced the oil pan with the engine in-car, and remember it wasn't all that easy to get at all the bolts. I had to remove the engine mounts and lift with a hoist to get enough clearance, so I don't really want to do that if it's likely I'm going to have to pull whole the engine anyway.
