In the search window at the top of this page if you type in ATF you'll find much discussion on this board about what ATF to use.
Dexron II and III are technical standards that were established by GM but are no longer licensed by GM. When the standards were current, nobody could put "Dexron II" or "Dexron III" on a label without GM's approval. Now the only quality assurance you have is buying a major brand, which is what you did.
GM introduced Dexron VI in 2005 (there is no such thing as Dexron IV or Dexron V), and GM says it is backward compatible with transmissions that specify any kind of Dexron. I think the jury is out on whether or not Dexron VI works well in these transmissions.
If you use the search window you'll see there was much discussion a few years ago about whether or not synthetic ATF is good for these transmissions. The pro-synthetic crowd prevailed (at least in my mind) on the strength of their years and miles of positive experience with it, including in 9000s with upgraded horsepower and torque. That said, neither Saab nor ZF has endorsed the use of synthetic ATF with this transmission. They won't endorse what they haven't tested, and why go to the touble and expense to test for users of older generation transmissions?
I triple changed mine with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF with good results. Probably what matters more than which ATF is keeping it fresh. Complete your triple (some say quadruple) change, and then change it once every 10,000 or 15,000 miles. I'm going with 15,000, but if I used the conventional DexMerc stuff I'd go with 10,000.
