High speed fan circuit with "low speed" fan?

So, the cooling fan on my wife's 92 9000S wasn't coming on (the car is new to us, it's never worked). Fan is fine. No power going to thermal switch, good ground. Bridged the switch leads (3 wires, 2 blue, one black) using the combo that was plugged in when I got the car (light blue, and black), fan didn't come on. Checked the relay, wasn't pulling down - no power through the switch circuit. Finally, was able to get a 12 volt reading using the dark blue/black combination. Still, no fan. However, this was causing the high speed relay to pull down and power was going to the 3 prong plug that is unused on the 9000S. So... I took apart the 3 prong "high speed" lead and hooked it to the radiator cooling fan, reconnected the thermal switch with the dark blue lead, and packed my tools back up, told my wife to drive the car, hoping that the temperature would climb and we'd have confirmation that with the thermal switch in place, the fan problem is now "solved".

Still no idea why the "low speed", light blue wire at the thermal switch wasn't getting any juice.

My question is this, will the "high speed" circuit now wired to the radiator cooling fan damage the fan - too much current/higher wattage? The blades on that relay are larger, which makes me a little worried... but then, the fans on all the 9000's in this vintage LOOK the same...

Thoughts? Any idea what might be causing the "low speed" positive lead to be dead? Will I soon be cooking my cooling fan? FYI, I'm not talking about the AC Condenser fan.
