I removed the rear wheels and looked around. No broken spring, no cracked spring, no rusted spring mounts. No apparent damage to the rear springs or to the rear shocks. The springs are marked identically and are oriented the same way.
On the right side spring there are a couple of clean spots on the two coils with the painted spots where there has been slight contact with the tire. Also on the right side there's a little clean spot on the inner wheelwell metal in front of the spring. No marks on the inside of the tire, and I haven't heard any rubbing.
Although the tires have a nominal 205 mm overall width, they're mounted on 7" rims. Per Michelin's published specs the actual width mounted on 6.5" rims is 8.4" (213 mm). The actual width mounted on 7" rims is 8.75" (222 mm). If I've done the math correctly, my nominal 205/60-15 tires are actually 222/51-15. The fat tire plus the sagging I have at the right rear adds up to a little occasional rubbing.
The right rear spring is apparently weaker than the left for reasons unknown. Time for me to buy the Bilstein HDs along with strut bearings, rear shock mount bolts and rear sway bar end bushings. Oh, and I'll need a spring compressor. I'll spend some time checking out the change in the ride, handling and appearance before deciding what to do about the rear springs.
Thank you all for helping me think this through! I'll post the results so you'll have the rest of the story.
