I'm fairly certain that the relay for the compressor is shared with the aux condenser fan mounted in front of the condenser.
It's probably the fan that is drawing too much current and causing the relay to overheat. I think it's rather unlikely that the clutch is drawing enough current to overheat the relay.
It could also be that the current draw is within spec, but the contacts on the relay are pitted/otherwise compromised and that is why it is overheating. Try running with a different relay in there first.
Then, I would suggest to unplug the fan and see how hot the relay gets. You can also take an amp reading on the fan and the clutch and see what they each are pulling.
Currently I can't check what they draw on my 96 CSE because I'm in the midst of putting a new compressor/drier/expansion valve in (had a seized compressor a couple of months ago). Once everything is running again I'll take an amp reading, but that might not be until Friday or Saturday.
I know on my previous 9000's that relay always did run very warm/hot, although it never cut out on me.
