Could repeated removal and refitting of a wheel eventually cause the bearing to fail? Torqued to spec, in the defined pattern at 88lbs/ft, under minimal load (I let the tire just touch the ground to provide friction against the torque wrench).
History:
November 2006 (original part) - First semester in college. Car is home and being driven occasionally until the fateful bearing "creak" begins. Purchased and installed a used hub over Thanksgiving break.
January 2007 - Used part breaks. Purchased a new hub, installed it over winter break, and took the car to Chicago.
December 2007 - First new hub breaks, just under one year. Warranty replacement.
August 2009 - Second new hub breaks. FCPGroton, the company from which I purchased the hub, doesn't guarantee parts replaced through a warranty. New part from Eeuroparts.
Before the definitive broken-bearing sound, I had the car on stands looking for a squeak. Turns out, even while torqued properly, the wheel/rotor assembly is loose. Bolts on the hub are tight, lug bolts are tight, strut mounting points are all tight, car drives without vibration; yet, with the car suspended, I can grasp the tire and use a rocking motion (as though trying to change camber) to produce this movement.
Any ideas? It's a little unsettling.
