Looking for ideas on a knocking sound

My 95 Aero is making a metallic sounding knock sound that varies with rpm. It changes volume based on rpm and load and can be heard best at just over idle and around 2k rpm. It also shows up more when keeping the rpm constant or lightly acceleration.
Engine runs great otherwise, compression numbers were exactly what they were when I bought the car and still boosts fully. At first I thought it was the exhaust coming loose, because I had a similar sound when the bolt that holds the catalytic up loosened. Ran it without the belt for a while to make sure it wasnt a pulley. I also popped the valve cover off and timing chain is tight, but the upper guide was hard as rock, so I have one on the way that should be in today-wednesday. I was trying to ideas if its not that rubber upper guide pad. The car has to make a 1000mi trip in 2 weeks, and just hoping its not rod knock or something else serious.
Thanks in advance.
