M1 synth works for me but... Posted by sam96CS [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: What's current thinking on ATF in a '95 CS?, Noel, Mon, 17 Aug 2009 10:49:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
frequent changes probably matter more than whether you go with conventional Dex/Merc or synthetic. The other important rule is to buy a major brand of ATF because GM no longer licenses or monitors the production of any ATF other than Dexron VI. You have to take the maker's word for it that the stuff in the bottle would make GM happy if GM was still licensing Dexron III.
The 3X change is just for the peace of mind of knowing when the fluid was about 90% fresh. Each time you change, you replace about 4.5 quarts, roughly half of the 8.9 quart system's capacity.
Heat stresses out ATF, and synthetic ATF holds up better against thermal stress than conventional. If your daughter's transmission cooler is clean, she isn't hauling heavy loads, she isn't towing and she isn't driving where ambient temperatures are high, then conventional ATF makes sense. But if you think she will occasionally stress the transmission or if you'd rather pay more and change at 15K intervals, then M1 synth is a great way to go.
The irony is that you can't buy any ATF that is officially blessed by Saab or ZF. Dexron III licenses expired in 2006. ZF and Saab never went to the trouble and expense to test with synthetic. GM says that Dexron VI is backward compatible, but there is no endorsement from Saab or ZF for Dexron VI. You ultimately must go with what your gut tells you to put in your daughter's car.
