I went ahead and dropped the transmission, replaced all clutch parts (throwout bearing was crunchy and slave cylinder was leaking, which probably fouled the bearing). Put everything back together and the high tinny growling noise I was hearing is gone. Clutch feels great.
Problem is that my shift linkage is off. Replaced the shift coupler when I did the clutch.
The car is a 1990 9Ks. According to the archives, I should pull the rubber boot on the shifter and find an alignment hole that goes down to the selector rod... there is no alignment hole, nor is there one on top of the gear box in the engine to lock into a gear. So what good does putting the shifter in reverse do if I can't line anything up?
I'm at a loss here...
