I've looked at lost of posts (like you have, probably) and can see no clear pattern. Some people say the earlier seats were better than the later ones, but it looks as though Bridge of Weir leather has been used throughout the production run, there are references to it in 87/88 cars and I had on my '93 CSE and have it now in my '97 Anniversary. My '90 9000S had grey Elmo leather, however, and plenty of cars in the early nineties had that too. If there is a pattern, maybe only Saab would know what it is!
A news report in 2008 said that Volvo was BofW's largest customer, and that their leather was being fitted to Lincolns after a fifteen-year campaign by the company to get it specified.
Cheap leather furniture these days is often upholstered with "split" hides which are softer but physically thinner and just don't last as long.
