This continues to be what, in my opinion, is only half right. And maybe half baked. (Flame away, I can take it!)
In my experience, you CAN lose rear traction under braking if you have regular tires on the rear and snows on the front. And you can easily get the rear hung out in a slippery corner, especially under braking. But if you are driving with care it's not the disaster many here make it out to be. Of course, if you have half-worn summer or all-seasons on the front and put snows on the back you may not be moving all that well to begin with in snowy weather.
In 30 years of FWD cars in northern New England, I've always put the best tires on the front, and never had any issues under any road conditions. I run four summer tires mid-April to Thanksgiving, and four snows Turkey day to April.
IMHO, snows on all 4 corners is a winter essential in snow country. You can buy decent tires for about $70/corner and it's well worth the safety and security in winter.
