trans fluid level check ??

1994 5spd Aero.
Issue:
Had a used Aero trans installed by a Saab independant shop in January. Of course, it was just after I finally buttoned up all the engine/trans leaks a few months earlier. Immediately after the trans was installed, I noticed a consistent leak at the selector rod bushing (coming out on the selector rod). It looked like a pain in the ass to try to remove the rod/bushing and check/replace, so I just resigned myself to parking over a cardboard in the garage.
Current:
The trans leak has slowed to barely anything now. Still there, but very slight. Is it possible the trans is now close to empty or was it potentially overfilled and now it's down to a proper level?
I looked in the Haynes manual and it seems the only way to check the trans fluid level is to fill it up until it runs out the check hole? It seems like a pain in the ass to remove the plug and fill; any tips?
