On the DI/APC cars, the crank position sensor is a Hall effect sensor that is activated by a aperture ring behind the harmonic balancer (crank pulley). On the Trionic cars, the sensor is a magnetic reluctance type that is stimulated by a shutter wheel on the flywheel side of the engine.
I don't know if the signal would remain high when the ring is positioned so the slot is at the sensor. A possible test might be to crank the engine and monitor the signal coming from the sensor. On an oscilloscope you might be able to see the pulse train. I am not so sure a DVM would pick up much more than a few millivolts AC because the duration is so short.
