Keep the guide pins if possible Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: stuck brake caliper.., Keith85spg, Thu, 15 Oct 2009 05:58:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Two things that I will add to Gene's excellent writeup:
1. The brake rotor has an area where the outer circumference edge has a dip in the generally round shape; this should be about 3" - 4" long. This area doesn't build up the outer "lip" that the rest of the rotor does, and will allow easier removal of the caliper if you rotate the rotor so that this area is in line with the brake pads.
2. If you are buying a rebuilt caliper that comes with the guide pins and bracket, there is a very good chance that the guide pins are plated steel vs. the OEM parts that were high quality stainless steel. These pins may be nice and shiny now, but are inferior in the long term and may have different size threads and hex size. If possible, I'd suggest cleaning off and reusing what you have, sorry that I didn't do this on the rear caliper that I replaced a few years ago. The new guide pins have gotten corroded (interferes with proper brake operation) and the old stainless guide pins don't fit the threading on the new bracket - the rebuilder must have drilled and rethreaded the bracket to match the inferior guide pins.
