Take any car to an incompetent mechanic and you get bad results. My #1 Saab indy makes mistakes, too, but he admits it and makes good on it. Nobody's perfect. But there are some things you need to pay more for, and a good tech is worth every penny.

At various places over the years I've had lug nuts over-torqued and not tightened at all, things misdiagnosed, not repaired properly, been lied to, and treated with contempt.

Living in a smallish town, I find repair shops to be pretty reasonable and fair because word gets out fast if they're not. In a larger town or a city it's harder to be sure of what you get if you don't know what to look for or ask about. I find it's useful to be able to talk technical with a technician. It shows you care and that you have a clue.
