Looks exactly like your piston ring failed. As derf already pointed out, that's not an a/f realted failure. More like a piston ring that either was just on the borderline of being too large (i.e. the ring did not have enough room to expand... end gap too small) and/or both ring end gaps were in the same position. The latter could have happened if the cross-hatch pattern was at an too steep pattern and caused the rings to rotate over time. Or, they could have been installed that way by the rebuilder (end gaps near each other). I'd pay a visit or a call to the rebuilder if I were you. If you take it apart, check the positions of the ring end gaps, and their specs and look over the cross-hatch pattern. Why was the engine rebuilt, if I may ask?
