As it turns out, the arrangement of normally-aspirated earlier cars like this one is that the flex pipe is integrated into the downpipe, which comes ahead of the catalytic converter.
That's good news for me, because I can simply replace the DP/flex pipe and not have to take the car to the mechanic for rewelding of the cat, which was what I was worried about.
I looked at the car yesterday. Obvious case of thoroughly gone engine mounts that caused the flex section to fail.
